Rapid growth within Horry County necessitated the School System to expand and provide 5 new schools to be occupied simultaneously in less than two years. This mandated a fast track, design-build construction process. Mozingo+Wallace, in conjunction with SfL+a and Stantec, were the Architects for this project. Mozingo+Wallace led the effort in the site planning, the floor plan layouts and was the Architect for the building's exterior designs and building envelope development. All schools incorporate the latest concepts in learning environments, providing all internal areas with natural lighting, glazed interior walls for observation purposes, and overlapping collaboration areas in the center atrium. In this atrium area, instruction can take place by combining several classes, or break up classes into smaller study groups. Mozingo+Wallace also provided project management on all 5 schools. All schools were designed, built and occupied in a time-line of less than 30 months. These state-of-the art, modern educational complexes are all energy positive facilities. At the end of each calendar year, the energy systems within the complex (solar, geothermal, captures, etc.) will have produced more energy than consumed. As a group, the five schools have been awarded Engineering News Record Southeast’s 2018 K-12 Project of the Year. Socastee Elementary has received a Silver Citation from American School and University in the magazine’s 2018 Education Interiors Showcase.
