A design concept developed for the City of Myrtle Beach, the Myrtle Beach Performing Arts Center incorporates both the city’s program and the experience of Mozingo + Wallace’s extensive team of consultants including experts in theater design, acoustics, lighting, audio-visual equipment, site development and landscaping, civil engineering, and a design-build partner, Contract Construction. The site layout takes advantage of existing contours to create a seating bowl for outdoor concerts. The building is placed to use an existing lake for a backdrop from the seating bowl. The same lake allows an imposing view of the building from the boulevard approaching the site, making the building an easily identifiable destination. The seating bowl accommodates up to 17,000 patrons, and is surrounded by facilities created to house vendors, sponsors and displays. The building is composed of simple wedge shapes to make construction more economical, yet is large enough to house all components required by the City. Theater and stage massing are contained with these shapes. The white and off-white palette of the wedges designate both the indoor facility as well and the outdoor venue. The structure includes a 600-seat main theater, a smaller black box theater, and outdoor stage opening onto the seating bowl, a natural light filled lobby doubling as an art gallery and public meeting space, back-of-house requirements for the theaters and administrative space. The design concept included a full construction estimate, which contained alternatives for various elements so that the city can prioritize components of its program to meet current budget constraints and plan for future expansion of the facility.
