At approximately 8,500 square feet, the new two story Georgetown County Airport Terminal followed the county's desire for expansion of terminal services and the creation of a welcoming Low Country presence for the many fly-in visitors, coming to the area's extensive industrial complexes, wonderful hunting and fishing opportunities, and ocean oriented vacation locales. Playing upon Georgetown's historic colonial architecture, this building features a stucco exterior with many large scale e.i.f.s. trims. Adding further to this aspect, deep overhangs of the metal roof are supported by heavy wood brackets, with large windows between brackets at the upper level. The expansive glass on both floors and direct views provide a sense of openness and connectivity to the activity occurring on the runway. The county's program required a multi-purpose facility. Therefore, the first floor houses air-traffic control along with accessory office space. Also, a pilot’s lounge is provided so patrons may break between flights. The lobby/waiting area is light and airy, taking advantage of the glazing mentioned above. The second floor provides the terminal’s new conference room and large dining/meeting room with attached kitchen. A second floor lobby provides an elevated observation area with direct view of the tarmac, mimicking the layout of the first floor lobby. A secondary pilot’s lounge was also incorporated on the second floor, which provides more secluded facilities with a private restroom and shower. The welcoming presence extends to the building's landside as well. There, concrete pavers reminiscent of old cobblestone streets and a bracket-supported wood arbor lead patrons to the main entry. This building reminds both arriving and departing visitors that Georgetown County is a great place for holidays and a great place in which to stay. Construction: Wood studwalls with steel pipe columns for additional loads, wood floor and roof trusses. Exterior combination E.I.F.S. and synthetic wood trims, metal roofing.
