The Darlington Speedway already housed a museum dedicated to Joe Weatherly, an early NASCAR champion. The owner wanted to convert this to a more comprehensive museum, featuring the drivers and cars that have appeared at Darlington over the years. The idea here was to create a notion of speed in a stationary building. This was done with a flowing "checkerboard flag" facade, and slanted reveals on the building face instead on the normal vertical orientation. Plans included updated parking and upgrading for interior finishes and lighting necessary for new displays. The announcement of the plans for the NASCAR Museum to be built in Charlotte scuttled the owner's plans for this building.
