Bullwinkle's is a family oriented restaurant / arcade chain, out of California, themed to the cartoon show of the 60's and 70's. An East coast franchisee provided a floor plan, and then commissioned Mozingo + Wallace to develop a national design prototype and vernacular for typical future facilities. The playful and cartoon exterior is highlighted by the water tower from the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, featured in the cartoons. The tower provides a focus to the entry as well as protection over it. Patrons enter beneath a waterfall flowing over the false rock face, setting the tone for the experience within. The exterior parapets are profiled to mimic a distant snow covered mountain range, laced with three dimensional trees and the cartoon characters from the series. The base of the restaurant is framed with logs acting as supports and overhangs to the shed roofs, with logs wrapping the windows, reinforcing the North woods log cabin appearance. Mozingo + Wallace also staged the interiors, engaging an electronics consultant to develop an animatronic character show inclusive of a dancing water fountain. The Myrtle Beach location was the first restaurant built, with modifications of the prototype later constructed in Carey, North Carolina and on Long Island, New York.
