Brookgreen Gardens’ dedicated an area of its estate to create the Enchanted Storybook Forest, a collection of structures just for kids by area architects, builders and artisans. Their handiwork provides fun for youngsters, who find the books they read coming to life. Mozingo + Wallace was invited to participate, and decided upon a Dr. Seuss themed structure, an open-air, elevated wood pavilion, sheathed in transparent Plexiglas panels. The panels protect the structure from the weather, provide for the infiltration of sunlight and allow parents and children to maintain visual contact. The elevated ramp is A.D.A. compliant and leads up to entrance wall, screened with the image of a large Dr. Seuss book cover. The interior area beyond will contain a series of quotes from Dr. Seuss. The kids would be able to recite these quotes while looking outbound, reflecting on themselves as well as the world beyond. The structure and finishes within would be painted in various primary colors found in Dr. Seuss illustrations, as well as decorated with various character cut-outs. All in all, a whimsical, abstract and interactive structure meant to inform, entertain and expand a child’s idea of self.
