Over the years, the Breakers Resort had expanded into an oceanfront complex of 4 towers and an older 3-story motel, yet still received guests for its over 400 units in a cramped, 2 person office area. Mozingo + Wallace was commissioned to convert the street-side portion of the old motel into a new grand lobby. Since the existing motel had only 8’ ceilings, the first levels were gutted down to existing building shell, to provide a larger space for the new lobby. As a result, structural enhancements were required to support the existing third floor, soon to become the mechanical area, creating ceiling coffers below. The new lobby plan provides entrances north and south, two-story windows which line Ocean Boulevard, and a registration area on the opposite, inner side. Each entry is accentuated by patterned canvas structural extensions. The interior decor includes carpet inlays between sections of marble floor tiles. The check-in desk is topped with a granite counter. Each station is identified with a custom wood louver panel, set between pilasters decorated with cast stone trims. Wide wood trims surround the windows, doors and ceiling perimeters.Wallpaper with rich colors decorates the walls along with wall sconces set against cast stone panels. Accessories included wooden blinds to blend with the reservation desk, as well as nostalgic black and white vintage photos of Myrtle Beach’s early years. The exterior finishes include stucco finishes with cast stone trims and surrounds. Additional details, such as water tables / fascia boards / friezes of coral stone, a hipped Spanish tile roof, etc., complete the transformation and provide the sophisticated, efficient lobby consistent with a resort of this scale.
