Beach First Bank (currently South Carolina Bank and Trust) was a brand-new bank, created by local Grand Strand business men to service the local economy. Being new, this group requested a unique curb side presence, so that the bank could attract depositors. To accomplish this, the building has a low slope roof with broad overhangs associated with local beach architecture. Then, wide columns are used to support the roof gables at the deep recesses at the building entrances. These combine to present a building of sturdy appearance, to denote a stable bank, and yet still look enough like old-time Myrtle Beach construction to provoke the attraction of being a local institution. To further the beach aspect, the stucco walls of the bank included crushed oyster shell for a ‘tabby’ appearance. Mozingo + Wallace accomplished a complete interior design package for this building, including the built-in teller’s line and the check writing desk. A vaulted ceiling allows plenty of sunlight to brighten the interiors through the high windows in the gable ends. Interior offices have glazed walls facing the lobby, to continue to spread this natural lighting, and to show the public the staff at work on their community. Construction: Structural steel frame with metal stud wall and roof framing, slab-on-grade floor with spread footings at columns; exterior finishes stucco (E.I.F.S.) with wood trims; interior finishes painted gypsum board, wood panels and trim.
