These drawings were produced in 2001 as part of M+W’s response to the RFQ for this job. A new natatorium and double gymnasium, along with support spaces, are added to the existing Rec Center. These additions can be constructed with only minor interruption of the on-going services provided in the existing facility. The entire exterior gives the building a completely new look, very different from the existing "brick public building rectangle". The use of glass block at the new gym's base gives the impression of a floating building where the upper facade of stucco and glazed walls overhangs the lower floor. A little bit of swoop to the roof line creates an active feel to the building, providing a small preview of the action going on inside. Yet a touch of tan masonry, matching the existing building's construction, affords the community with the continuity so many look for.
